Ships technology remained somewhat similar from Titanic age to 1980s until modern gadgets came into being. Sailors took pride in navigation out at sea with Sun, moon and stars using the sextant”, no such thing as electronic charts, just printed British Admiralty charts. Commanding ships at the age of twenty years of age in that era, It was tough sailing encountering rough seas and many hurdles, overcast skies for days not exactly knowing where the ship in the middle of the ocean apart from DR (Dead reckoning) an estimate yet sailors dealing with day to day affairs to get the ship from A to B.
